Spark heroes had a great week working on final preparations for their end-of-session exhibition. The focus was seasons and weather. They created “thunder bags” and “hurricane houses” which they incorporated into their exhibition activities and gallery display. They proudly displayed their weather and temperature chart and seasons timeline, along with all their other wonderful makerspace creations!
This week in the afternoons, the heroes were dealing with a lot of precipitation! After seeing tons of water roaring down Nakoma Creek during outdoor time, we talked about where the water might be going. In the studio we spent a couple of launches on Google Maps, starting at the school and following the creek all the way to the end. The heroes were excited that it would end in the ocean, but were surprised at how long it took to get there! We also explored rivers and seas on other continents and discussed how the water returned to Nakoma Park. Besides exploring water and snow, heroes learned to use a screwdriver and even a power drill to assemble a bird-proof squirrel feeder, which now lives outside the studio window. It’s been such a treat to see squirrels coming to feast!
Next session we will focus on space exploration! The children have shown lots of interest in learning more about the universe, so we are excited to follow their curiosity and facilitate this exciting endeavor. Some planned activities include chalk rockets, model rockets, state-of-matter experiments, and a field trip to the planetarium……we will work over the break to come up with more!
